South African Shark attack

In reaction to the recent articles in the news paper and radio regarding the closure of some of the Port Elizabeth beaches to fishing

We need to look at the increase of swimmers and the population explosion of Great white sharks before we start blaming anglers for the minuscule increase in shark attacks around the South African coastline. Port Elizabeth has had 6 shark attacks in the past 21 years so why are we even considering the closure of beaches to fisherman in the Port Elizabeth area? As angler we pay to fish, swimmers and surfers don’t. Yet we are the most discriminated of any beach users in the country. Maybe we should start limiting the areas that surfers may use and see how they feel.   Or maybe introduce a permit system so they can surf and see how they react if we close the surfing areas along the beach front to them. Both my sons surf and I don’t have a problem with surfers but when they start blaming anglers for attracting sharks then I start getting upset. We should respect each others rights and If fisherman are fishing in an area first then the surfers should surf on another spot and the same goes for fisherman if the surfers are there first respect there right to surf and fish the area once they have left the water and we can all get along. Sharks don’t just attack and if surfers knew how many sharks where swimming below them they would probably not even enter the water. If there was an increase in shark attacks I would agree with the justification but there has never been a shark attack near fisherman all the attacks have been in areas with no fisherman apart from the last attack that happened when Tony Dell the last recorded attack was bitten whilst trying to gaff a shark attached to an anglers line so it can’t even be counted as an attack as the shark was partly provoked by the angler with the gaff.
